Luis von Ahn, the founder of the popular language learning platform Duolingo, believes that artificial intelligence is already capable of significantly enhancing the learning process. He predicts that in the future, AI will play a central role in schools, while teachers will primarily act as mentors.
Duolingo is actively incorporating cutting-edge technologies, having shifted away from human involvement in creating educational materials. Von Ahn points out that 116 million users engage with the platform monthly, enabling the company to conduct numerous A/B tests to refine its teaching methods.
He asserts that schools will continue to exist as centers for child care, but the primary mode of learning will be through AI. According to him, AI can provide more accurate assessments of student abilities and better tailor educational tasks than a teacher managing a classroom of thirty students.
Some educational institutions are already implementing AI in their curricula. For instance, the private Alpha School network in the USA allows students to learn with AI for two hours a day, with teachers serving as guides providing emotional support. The school has plans to open additional branches, with tuition ranging from $40,000 to $65,000 per year.
Von Ahn believes that significant changes in the education system will not happen overnight: "Education evolves slowly, just like government does".
