Wikipedia, the vast online encyclopedia, is beginning to incorporate artificial intelligence into its operations. However, this initiative aims not to displace volunteers but to optimize their contributions. This is outlined in a new strategy released by the Wikimedia Foundation.

"The volunteers behind Wikipedia are the core and irreplaceable element of its success. For nearly 25 years, editors have collaborated to create the largest encyclopedia ever. Their passion and dedication to factual knowledge is something that artificial intelligence cannot replicate," the statement reads.

With this approach, Wikipedia will utilize AI to automate certain aspects like content moderation, allowing a focus on crucial areas. This will also enhance information accessibility, leaving more time for human discussions and consensus-building.

Additionally, artificial intelligence will assist editors in sharing local knowledge by automating translation and topic adaptation. AI will also facilitate the onboarding of new volunteers through a mentorship program.
