The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially approved the program for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games, set to be held in Los Angeles, California, USA.

This was announced by the IOC press service.

The press release highlights that gender equality was a significant factor in the development of the 2028 Olympic program.

Despite more medal events for men (165 compared to 161), for the first time in history, the total number of female participants will exceed that of male participants: 5333 to 5167.

This advancement has primarily been achieved through the expansion of women's team sports, where women will have at least equal representation with men.

For instance, the number of teams in the men's football tournament has been reduced from 16 to 12, while the women's tournament has been increased from 12 to 16. Additionally, six sports, including table tennis, archery, and athletics (4x100m relay), will feature new mixed events for men and women. Overall, there will be 22 more medal events in 2028 than at the previous Olympics in Paris.
