At the World Wrestling Championship taking place in Zagreb, Croatia, Ukraine has secured its first medal! Maria Vynnyk has won silver in the 59 kg weight category.
The 23-year-old athlete began her journey to the podium by defeating European vice-champion Erika Bognar from Hungary, then overcame world and European championship medalist, Norwegian Otele Hoye, to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, Maria triumphed over three-time Pan American champion from Canada, Lawrence Boregard. Unfortunately, in the gold medal match, the Ukrainian wrestler lost to Asian champion and U20 world champion Sakura Onishi from Japan with a score of 8:17.
