The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has signed a new law concerning adaptive sports aimed at involving veterans and individuals with disabilities.

This document officially recognizes adaptive sports as a distinct category of physical activity, as reported by the Ministry of Veterans Affairs and the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine.

Adaptive sports focus on physical activities for individuals with disabilities, aimed at their rehabilitation, social inclusion, and full participation in societal life.

The bill enhances the existing legislation "On Physical Culture and Sports" by specifying:

  • the responsibilities of the Ministry of Youth and Sports in coordinating activities for the development of adaptive sports and achievements of individuals with disabilities;
  • the bodies that will organize such activities;
  • the responsibilities of local administrations to ensure conditions for the development of adaptive sports;
  • the role of sports federations in promoting adaptive sports.

The law also stipulates that conditions for engaging in adaptive sports must be created in the residences of veterans and individuals with disabilities, as well as in health resorts, leisure facilities, and tourist bases.

"Adaptive sports will help individuals with disabilities restore their physical and mental health, as well as facilitate their successful self-actualization. This is a significant step towards creating an effective system for the development of adaptive sports in Ukraine," explained the Ministry of Veterans Affairs.
