A court in Germany has handed down a life sentence to a couple for the murder of two Ukrainian women and the abduction of their child, according to DW.
Life Sentence for a Horrific Crime in Germany
The court determined that the couple intended to pass off one of the victim's children as their own, which added to the severity of their guilt.
This implies that parole after 15 years is nearly impossible for the convicted.
However, the court's decision may still be appealed.
In January, the couple confessed to the crime at the beginning of the trial.
They murdered two Ukrainian women to acquire a newborn child.
What to Know About the Murder of Ukrainians in Germany
In March this year, the body of 27-year-old Margarita Razaz from Kharkiv was discovered near the town of Hockenheim along the Rhine. She had been living in a refugee center with her mother and newborn daughter. The child, Mia, was soon found safe.
Her grandmother, 51-year-old Marina Stetsenko, was initially reported missing but was later found dead in a lake near Bad Schönborn.
Suspects in the case included a 43-year-old Russian woman and a 44-year-old German man. According to investigators, they killed the mother and grandmother to take the child for themselves. The criminals lured the refugees with promises of assistance in obtaining documents in Germany.
