The Ukrainian documentary titled "Militantropos" has been selected for the Cannes Festival, specifically in the "Directors' Fortnight" program.
This was announced by the film's team. Currently, it is the only full-length Ukrainian film showcased at Cannes.
In the docu-days catalog, information about the project can be found, which includes a triptych of three films, each lasting 70 minutes. The films "MILITANTROPOS, PALINGENESION, and COSMOMORPHOSIS" explore how the war in Ukraine affects people and their environment.
Since 2022, the project has been actively seeking funding, garnering significant attention. For instance, the IDFA documentary festival in 2024 provided financial support of 25,000 euros.
Considering that one of the directors is Alina Horlova, who gained fame after the success of the film "This Rain Will Never Stop," one can expect an abstract observational film filled with artistic elements and montage experiments, - noted film critic Sonya Vselyubska.
Joining the creative team are director Yelyzaveta Smith, director Semen Mozhovyi, and cinematographers Vyacheslav Tsvetkov, Khrystyna Lizohub, and Denys Melnyk.
The title of the new film project is a neologism created by the team, described as a statement of their group: "MILITANTROPOS (Latin 'milit' - warrior; Greek 'antropos' - human) represents the essence that a person acquires when entering a state of war. This extreme experience demands constant individual and collective transformation, thus in times of upheaval, MILITANTROPOS chooses war as the only means of survival."
"Militantropos" is a co-production involving Ukraine, Austria (MISCHIEF FILMS), and France (LES VALSEURS BORDEAUX). The Ukrainian producer of the project is Yevhen Rachkovskyi, who also co-produced the French co-production film about FEMEN titled "Oksana" and the new documentary by Dmytro Sukholytkyi-Sobchuk titled "Quiet Flood."
In 2022, the world premiere of Maksym Nakonechnyi's debut feature film "Vision of the Butterfly" took place in the "Un Certain Regard" section. He joined "MILITANTROPOS" as a screenwriter. Ukrainian philosopher and serviceman Oleksandr Komarov has also joined the project.
Last week at the festival press conference, it was announced that Harris Dickinson's debut film "Urchin," featuring Ukrainian actress Karina Khymchuk, has been selected for the "Un Certain Regard" program of the Cannes Film Festival in 2025.
