Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to travel to the United States for crucial strategic discussions – marking his first visit since Donald Trump began his second presidential term.
This has been reported by Hurriyet Daily News and noted by "European Truth".
During Fidan's visit to Washington, he is scheduled to engage in strategic talks with Secretary of State Marco Rubio on March 25-26.
Unnamed Turkish diplomatic sources have indicated that the discussions will primarily focus on the bilateral relations between Turkey and the US, as well as the preparation of upcoming high-level visits.
Shortly before this, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a phone conversation with Trump.
Key discussion points are expected to include efforts to end the Russian war against Ukraine, recent developments in Syria, and issues relating to bilateral relations, particularly the advancement of defense cooperation. Fidan is also likely to raise the cancellation of US sanctions imposed under CAATSA in 2020, and Turkey's return to the F-35 program, from which it was excluded after acquiring the Russian S-400 missile defense systems.
It is worth noting that negotiations regarding sanctions removal and fighter jets were a significant reason Turkey delayed agreeing to Finland and Sweden's NATO accession.
According to sources, Fidan plans to remind about Ankara's peace initiatives over the years and convey the message that Turkey is ready to assist US efforts in achieving a ceasefire, leading to a permanent peace agreement.
Fidan will also urge the US to lift sanctions on Syria, where the power dynamics have changed, and work with Turkey on humanitarian aid issues.
Additionally, cooperation against ISIS and control of detention facilities in eastern Syria will be discussed. The Turkish minister will also call on the US to "leverage its influence over Israel" for a sustainable ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
