The National Bank of Ukraine has unveiled a new silver commemorative coin named "Archangel Michael" as part of the "Spiritual Treasures of Ukraine" series. This was reported by the bank's press service on Facebook.
The coin was presented at the Lviv National Museum named after Andrey Sheptytsky within the framework of the cultural project "Archangel Michael" This issue is dedicated to Archangel Michael, one of the most revered heavenly patrons of the Ukrainian people.
"The National Bank is proud to contribute to this remarkable project, as the release honors the 120th anniversary of the founding of the Lviv National Museum and the 160th anniversary of the birth of its founder, Andrey Sheptytsky, the spiritual angel of the Ukrainian nation. We aimed for our new coin to embody the spiritual strength of Ukrainians, symbolizing divine protection and faith in victory," stated Yevhen Kondratenko, head of the Numismatic Products and Cash Operations Department of the NBU.
The design of the new coin is based on the image of Archangel Michael from the deacon's gates of the Zhykiv Iconostasis from the late 17th century, created by the renowned Ukrainian master Ivan Rutkovych.
The obverse features the royal gates of the Zhykiv Iconostasis with a prayer to Archangel Michael. Above the gates is a stylized arch symbolizing light overcoming darkness. At the top, the inscription reads: "Who is like God" - a traditional call to the archangel.
The reverse depicts Archangel Michael from the Zhykiv Iconostasis, rendered using local gilding and color printing. The Archangel appears in military armor, holding a sword and scales amidst the clouds. The background of the reverse is decorated with a floral ornament in the Baroque style.
The nominal value of the coin is 10 UAH. The coin will be available for purchase starting November 11 on the NBU's online numismatic store and at authorized banks.
