On October 1, Ukrainians celebrate Defender's Day, coinciding with the Feast of the Protection of the Holy Virgin Mary.
This state holiday was established on October 14, 2014, but was renamed Defender's Day in 2021. Traditionally observed on October 14, the date was moved to October 1 in 2023 due to changes in the church calendar.
With the transition to the New Julian calendar, Orthodox Christians now celebrate religious holidays 13 days earlier, including the Protection, which is now celebrated on October 1.
The need for such a national holiday became particularly evident after the annexation of Crimea and the onset of military actions in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The courage of Ukrainian warriors deserves proper recognition.
On Defender's Day, a moment of silence will be observed across the country in memory of the fallen, along with a joint prayer for Ukraine and its heroes.
The Protection of the Holy Virgin is one of the most significant feasts in Christianity. According to legend, the Holy Virgin appeared during the siege of Constantinople, protecting the city from enemies. This feast symbolizes protection and guardianship.
For centuries, the Holy Virgin has been the patroness of the Cossacks. Important events like the election of a hetman took place on this day. Zaporozhian Cossacks prayed before heading into battle and gave thanks upon their return.
The modern Ukrainian army continues these traditions, adopting names of legendary commanders and elements of Cossack uniforms. Many churches have been built in honor of the Protection, with one of the oldest being the church in Sutkivtsi, constructed in 1467.

In Shmyhal's greetings, it is stated that thanks to the defenders, we can preserve the past and build a future.
"You are an example for our children and true heroes. I wish you strength and resilience on the path to peace. Thank you for your courage and protection," emphasized the Minister of Defense.
He also noted: "We remember those who are imprisoned and fight for their return. We bow our heads to those who gave their lives for Ukraine."

General-Lieutenant Vasyl Maliuk also congratulated the defenders on their holiday. He emphasized that we celebrate this day in the midst of war, and our goal is to end it. We seek peace on worthy terms and continue our resistance.

Our defenders demonstrate their courage and ability to protect the country on the front lines and in the rear. We continue to secure the Ukrainian rear and strike at the enemy.

Maliuk stated: "We are a peaceful nation ready for battle. We stand firmly on our land and will fight for a peaceful future for our children."
