The European Union is launching the Entry/Exit System (EES). From October 12, 2025, the rules for crossing EU borders will change for Ukrainians. According to the Department of Consular Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, this is an automated database that will record all crossings of the EU's external borders by citizens of third countries, including Ukraine.

The system applies to trips lasting up to 90 days within any 180-day period (short stays). Now, instead of passport stamps, there will be a digital registration process.

The data collected includes:

  • facial photograph
  • fingerprints of 4 fingers (for individuals over 12 years old)
  • information from the passport
  • date, place of entry/exit, and instances of entry denial

How it will work in practice:

  • All passengers must exit vehicles to undergo biometric checks;
  • Rail travel procedures will depend on the border crossing point and may vary;
  • Refusal to provide biometric data is a legal basis for entry denial.

Why is this being implemented?

  • to enhance the monitoring of compliance with EU stay rules;
  • to prevent the use of forged documents;
  • to increase security in Schengen Area countries.
