Google has urged its 2.5 billion Gmail users to promptly update their passwords and enhance account security due to recent malicious attacks, as reported by the New York Post.
Users are advised to remain vigilant against suspicious activities and to activate additional security measures, including two-factor authentication, if they haven't already done so.
Hackers typically gain access to accounts through phishing emails containing fake login pages or by tricking users into providing two-factor authentication codes. While most individuals use strong passwords, only a third of them regularly update them.
Google emphasizes the importance of bolstering security following the breach of Salesforce, where sensitive data, including information about small and medium businesses, was compromised. According to Google, the group ShinyHunters, known for attacks on companies like AT&T, Microsoft, Santander, and Ticketmaster, may launch new attacks and extort victims by setting up a data leak site.
Google notes that the new attack methods are designed to increase pressure on victims, especially those affected by recent Salesforce incidents.
Users impacted by the recent attack have received emails from Google. The company encourages everyone to check their account activity regularly, avoid suspicious links, and report any unusual behavior.
