President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a new law recognizing citizens deported from Ukraine between 1944 and 1951, who were forcibly relocated from the Polish People's Republic.
The law stipulates that those forcibly relocated from Poland to the USSR during the population exchange are officially recognized as deported. It defines the status of these persons and their descendants, ensures state support including social benefits, medical care, and preservation of historical memory, while obligating the state to honor the memory of these deportations.
Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga emphasized that the Ukrainian state will continue to systematically address the evaluation and condemnation of every crime committed by the totalitarian Soviet regime.
“This is primarily about people. Unfortunately, many witnesses to those tragic events have already passed away. However, to protect the rights of those still living and their descendants, our state guarantees the assistance provided by the law,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine stated.
