Voice and motion capture actors in the video game industry have reached significant agreements with studios, signing a new contract that aims to safeguard them from the impacts of artificial intelligence while enhancing their working conditions. This was reported by Reuters, citing the SAG-AFTRA union.
Sarah Elmaleh, a voice actress known for her work on titles like Final Fantasy XV and Call of Duty: Black Ops III, emphasized that artificial intelligence was a central issue in the new agreement. She highlighted the importance for actors to establish ethical guidelines for the use of AI in the gaming industry.
The agreement includes new protective measures requiring studios to obtain consent from actors before using AI-generated imitations of their voices. Additionally, actors have the right to withdraw their consent during potential strikes.
This agreement was signed with several studios, including Activision Productions, Blindlight, Disney Character Voices, Electronic Arts Productions, Formosa Interactive, Insomniac Games, Llama Productions, Take 2 Productions, and WB Games.
“We are pleased that SAG-AFTRA members have ratified the new 'Interactive Media Agreement,' which includes historic pay increases, industry-leading AI protection, and enhanced health and safety measures for performers,” stated studio spokesperson Audrey Cooling.
The new 'Interactive Media Agreement' was supported by 95.04% of SAG-AFTRA members. In addition to the fundamental principles regarding AI, it also provides for increased safety measures for motion capture actors, who may face health risks during recordings. Medical personnel will now always be available during high-risk tasks.
Moreover, an important aspect of the agreement is the salary increase for both motion capture and voice actors, with a raise of 15.17% followed by an additional 3% increase in November 2025, November 2026, and November 2027.
