U.S. President Donald Trump has declared a state of emergency for Kerr County, Texas, following sudden floods that have resulted in at least 61 fatalities.
Trump's statement on the social media platform Truth Social, as reported by Reuters.
Trump indicated that his decision would aid in providing responders with essential resources to address the aftermath of this tragedy.
Quote: "I just signed a declaration of emergency for Kerr County, Texas, to immediately provide our brave responders with the necessary resources. These families are facing an unimaginable tragedy — many lives have been lost, and many people are still missing".
The death toll from the floods in Texas has risen to 67 on Sunday, including 21 children.
According to Reuters, some experts question whether cuts made during the Trump administration, particularly in the agency overseeing the National Weather Service, may have contributed to officials' failure to predict the extent of the flooding in time and issue necessary warnings.
Former director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Rick Spinrad noted that President Trump and his administration cut thousands of jobs at NOAA, leaving many meteorological offices understaffed.
