Today, June 13, the EU Council meeting on justice and internal affairs took place in Luxembourg, where a significant political decision was made to extend the temporary protection directive for Ukrainians until March 4, 2027.
This was reported by “European Truth” citing the EU Council's press service.
Temporary protection for Ukrainians fleeing Russian aggression will be in effect until 2027
According to the newly adopted political resolution, Ukrainians escaping the war will have their temporary protection extended until March 4, 2027. After this period, they will have the option to either remain in the host country with a new legal status or return to Ukraine without any obstacles.
The final decision regarding the extension of temporary protection will be formally approved within the next few weeks.
This delay is due to the need to agree on technical details, such as translating the document into all official EU languages, as reported by “EuroTruth” journalists at the EU Council.
Recommendations for EU member states regarding further actions after 2027 will also be approved with some delay due to technical matters.
Ukraine has insisted on extending temporary protection until the end of the war
Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Chernyshov stated that Ukraine calls for the extension of temporary protection status for its citizens in EU countries until the conflict is resolved.
Previously, the European Union plans to determine the future status of Ukrainian refugees at the EU Council meeting in June 2025.
Currently, Ukrainians benefit from the temporary protection directive introduced in March 2022 in response to the full-scale invasion by Russia.
This directive guarantees the right to residence, employment, housing, healthcare, social assistance, and education for children. Its validity has been extended until March 4, 2026.
