June 6 marks the second anniversary of the tragic event — the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant. This crime inflicted severe damage on the ecology, energy sector, and security in southern Ukraine.

Today we commemorate two years since the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP — one of the key infrastructure facilities in southern Ukraine. On the night of June 6, 2023, Russian troops blew up the dam, leading to catastrophic ecological consequences.

According to the acting CEO of Ukrhydroenergo, Bohdan Sukhetsky, the company already has a recovery plan for the station, which will be implemented immediately after de-occupation. The construction of a modern HPP according to the highest ecological standards will take about five years, and filling the reservoir will require an additional two years.

The dam explosion had disastrous consequences: destruction of water resources, suspension of navigation, electricity shortages, and billions in annual losses for the energy system. According to estimates from Ukrhydroenergo, losses from unreceived electricity amount to 6-8 billion hryvnias annually.

Sukhetsky also noted that the international community has not adequately assessed the tragedy, which has only intensified Russia's aggression against Ukraine's hydroelectric infrastructure.

Restoring the Kakhovka HPP is not just a technical process. It is a matter of national security, food stability, and the ecological future of southern Ukraine.

It is worth noting that the Security Service of Ukraine has opened a criminal case regarding the explosion of Kakhovka HPP. Investigations are being conducted under two articles of the Criminal Code: Article 438 (violation of the laws and customs of war); Article 441 (ecocide).
