Details: Speaking at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on "The Role of the EU in Establishing a Just and Sustainable Peace in Ukraine," Ursula von der Leyen remarked that Ukraine's EU membership would be the strongest guarantee of lasting peace.
Direct Quote: "We must expedite Ukraine's path to membership in our Union. This is not only Ukraine's aspiration – it could be the strongest security guarantee. This was the focus of my recent meeting with President Zelensky in Rome.
The war in Ukraine will eventually end, and how it ends will shape the European continent for generations to come."
Details: The President of the European Commission expressed her belief that "a bad deal could encourage Putin to return with renewed strength, which would be a recipe for increasing instability and insecurity."
"In contrast, a just and lasting peace could usher in a new era of prosperity for Ukraine and help us build a new security architecture for Europe," she emphasized.
Thus, von der Leyen outlined three priorities for the EU on the path to establishing a just peace for Ukraine: "First, support Ukraine's defense capabilities. Second, complete the phased withdrawal from Russian fossil fuels. And third, accelerate the process of Ukraine's accession to our Union."
