In Lviv, medical professionals conducted surgery on a four-year-old boy who was found to have a large liver tumor, discovered by chance.

The tumor occupied a significant portion of the organ and could have led to serious complications, as reported by the St. Nicholas Children's Hospital.

The tumor in Yuriy from Brody was detected during a routine ultrasound. The child had no complaints about his health, and by the time it was discovered, the tumor had already reached 10 centimeters.

"If left untreated, the tumor would have begun to compress the vessels supplying blood to the liver, potentially resulting in organ failure and the need for an urgent transplant. Therefore, immediate surgery was necessary," the doctors stated.

The operation took place two weeks after the diagnosis was confirmed. It lasted for six hours and was complex due to the risk of blood loss.

"Initially, our surgeons – Oleksandr Kalinchuk, Denys Konoplytskyi, Andriy Dvorakevych – divided the liver into three parts and completely removed the central, most affected section.

While separating the vessels, including those feeding the tumor, they used a Cell Saver machine, which cleanses the blood lost during surgery and returns it to the body. The final step involved suturing the two liver sections together," the hospital explained.

It is known that the surgical intervention was successful. The boy is now undergoing a lengthy recovery with a team of anesthesiologists, surgeons, and rehabilitation specialists.

"He is a smiling and healthy boy, looking forward to a full life without limitations," the doctors concluded.
