The US State Department has announced it will offer temporary funding for a project aimed at documenting abducted Ukrainian children to facilitate data transfer to relevant authorities.

Details: A spokesperson for the US State Department stated that the funding is being provided for a limited time while program implementers ensure the proper transfer of critical data about the children: "This is part of the standard procedure for closing down programs that are no longer operational."

Earlier this month, Democratic lawmakers called on the Trump administration to reinstate the program.

This government-funded initiative, led by the Yale University Humanitarian Research Lab, has helped track thousands of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.

Reminder:

  • The closure of the program raised concerns about the potential loss of access to vast amounts of information, including satellite imagery and other data regarding about 30,000 children taken from Ukraine.
  • The decision to terminate the program came after Trump ordered a broad review to prevent what he termed wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars on initiatives that do not align with American interests.
  • Ukraine reported that over 19,500 children were taken to Russia or occupied territories during the war without the consent of their families or guardians.
