The suspect, along with his accomplices, stole a bag containing 15 million hryvnias.
The bag was taken from the trunk of a car servicing a currency exchange in the city center. The robbers had been tracking the money transportation for nearly a year. This was reported by the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office.
The organizer of the crime was arrested and charged. He turned out to be a 46-year-old repeat offender who had been imprisoned for intentional murder. He was released in 2015 and orchestrated the theft, thoroughly preparing for the crime.
The criminals discovered that large sums of money were temporarily kept in the trunk of a car parked near the exchange office. They had cut a hole in the trunk in advance, through which they pulled out a rope to open it at the right moment.
When the moment came, the thieves blocked the office entrance doors and took the bag containing almost 15 million hryvnias.
The organizer of the crime was charged under part 5 of article 185 of the Criminal Code — theft committed in especially large amounts or by an organized group. He faces a penalty of 7 to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
The court has taken him into custody with the possibility of bail set at 9 million hryvnias. The accomplices are being identified. It is not reported whether law enforcement has recovered the stolen money.
