The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine is actively negotiating with international partners to introduce the Ukrainian language into the educational curricula of other countries.

This was announced by Minister Oksen Lisovyi during a session in the Verkhovna Rada.

He noted that currently there are 340,000 Ukrainian children studying abroad, who are compelled to learn the local language, English, and often choose Russian as a third foreign language.

“We truly see the potential of the Ukrainian language as a foreign language, which is why we are actively negotiating with partners, and this issue is already supported by many education ministries,” Lisovyi stated.

The proposal involves teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language from the basics. This will also help reduce the burden on our children, and we are currently working on this,” he added.

The minister also shared that several steps have already been taken for preparation, including the development of new standards.

When asked whether it will be possible to implement the teaching of the Ukrainian language next academic year, Oksen Lisovyi emphasized that it depends on the progress of negotiations with each country.

“We will definitely make progress with certain countries, such as Poland, where the largest number of our children are located,” the minister believes.

Previously, the Ministry of Education and Science reported that by January 2025, over 355,000 Ukrainian children are simultaneously studying in Ukrainian schools and educational institutions in other countries.
