As part of a new program, the Belgian agency Enabel is supplying 35 generators with a total capacity of 4,000 kW to educational institutions in Kyiv. This was announced by Valentyn Mondryiivskyi, the Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration.
«Kyiv is actively working to strengthen the energy independence of critical infrastructure and social facilities. We are currently signing necessary agreements and processing documentation. We are doing everything possible to ensure the stable operation of schools and kindergartens,» he stated.
According to him, 35 educational institutions will receive generators, including 25 schools, 9 kindergartens, and 1 vocational education institution. The total capacity of the equipment will be nearly 4,000 kW, allowing them to operate during power outages. The education departments have identified which institutions will receive the equipment first.
This initiative is part of a larger program by Enabel aimed at restoring critical and social infrastructure in Ukraine.
According to the Kyiv City Department of Education and Science, as of the beginning of the school year, 683 educational institutions in the city have generators with a total capacity of 6,274 kW, including 373 schools with 4,013 kW, 285 kindergartens with 1,630 kW, and 26 other institutions with 667 kW. These volumes are insufficient for the full operation of the institutions.
To ensure a quality educational process amidst war and energy challenges, the city authorities are developing a comprehensive energy independence program for each institution. This program will include the purchase of generators of necessary capacity, energy storage systems, and the installation of solar power plants depending on the needs of schools and kindergartens, with implementation set to begin in 2025.
