Establishing a secure educational environment is crucial for the capital of Ukraine amid the wartime situation. This was emphasized by Valentyn Mondryiivskyi, Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration, on his Facebook page.
In 2024, a budget of 1,300,277 thousand UAH has been allocated for the modernization of Kyiv's educational institutions, with an additional 1,986,961 thousand UAH for the repair of kindergartens and schools.
“Most of these funds will be directed towards establishing shelters, 25% for roof repairs, while the remainder will be spent on window replacements, facade insulation, modernization of engineering systems, and ensuring accessibility. Kyiv has over a thousand municipal educational institutions, which is why these amounts seem substantial. However, all these efforts are aimed at creating a safe educational environment,” commented Valentyn Mondryiivskyi.
For instance, in the Darnytskyi district, repairs to shelters in 64 educational institutions have been completed, and the construction of three new shelters is ongoing. Energy-saving measures (capital repairs of facades and roofs) are being implemented in 21 facilities. Additionally, two kindergartens that were non-operational and required full restoration are undergoing major repairs.
In the Holosiivskyi district, the construction of four shelters and the reconstruction of a school with an attached shelter is in progress. Repairs are being conducted in 29 educational institutions, with energy efficiency measures being implemented in 28 and major repairs to engineering networks in 18.
In the Dniprovs'kyi district, three schools are being equipped with dual-purpose structures with radiation protection properties. Repairs to shelters are being completed in 52 educational institutions, and energy efficiency measures are being implemented in 55.
Valentyn Mondryiivskyi emphasized that most new shelters serve dual purposes – providing protection for both students and the civilian population.
He noted that Kyiv, as the largest city in Ukraine and its capital, has accepted and organized education for the highest number of internally displaced persons during the full-scale invasion. Therefore, comparing Kyiv with other cities in the context of tenders for the construction and reconstruction of educational institutions is inappropriate.
