The Kyiv City Council has reached out to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Cabinet of Ministers urging them to ensure dignified working conditions for educators. This appeal was supported by city council members during the plenary session held on October 31.
As noted by city council member Boris Siklitsky, the appeal emphasizes that in the context of low salaries and high risks, especially during the state of war, the threat of losing qualified educators is increasing, which could negatively affect the quality of education for the younger generation.
«Educators play a crucial role in shaping the worldview of young people, often holding a parental-like influence. Now, when schools and universities serve not just as places of learning but also as spaces of safety and support, it is vital that their work is valued appropriately. This will help retain personnel within the educational system and maintain the quality of education. We insist on increasing the salary for first-tier workers to 3,600 UAH as stipulated in the 2024 state budget and propose changing the bonus system to establish it at 30% of the salary for educators at various levels. Additionally, the deputies ask not to halt the regulation regarding the salaries of educational researchers to avoid a greater staffing shortage in the education sector,» stated Boris Siklitsky.
He added that systemic changes must be implemented at the state level to ensure a stable salary in line with the rising economic standards in the country.
