At the «Olympiyska» metro station in Kyiv, work has commenced on the installation of a new tactile strip system using cold plastic, as reported by Kyiv Metro.
The tactile navigation will be implemented throughout the entire station complex and in the underground passage. The work is being carried out at night when there are no passengers present.
The advantage of this technology lies in the quick and practical application of tactile indicators without interfering with the existing granite surface. Unlike tactile tiles, cold plastic is more cost-effective while serving the same purpose — assisting visually impaired individuals in navigating and moving safely through designated spaces.
Prior to starting the work, several consultation and testing phases were conducted in collaboration with representatives from organizations for people with disabilities. The tactile indicators were applied according to modern standards, and their effectiveness was tested by visually impaired passengers. Feedback from these passengers helped refine and enhance the tactile layout.
Throughout every stage of the project, from discussions to practical testing, there is close cooperation with the National Assembly of Persons with Disabilities of Ukraine, the organization «TRINITY HUB», and the «Foundation 03:00», as well as with the Commissioner of the Kyiv City Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Lesya Petrivska.
Metro specialists are taking into account all recommendations regarding the dimensions and quantities of tactile indicators while creating this navigation system.
Additionally, the metro offers an escort service for passengers with limited mobility. This service can be requested by calling (044) 238-55-11 at least one hour before travel. An employee will meet the passenger at the station and provide the necessary assistance for a comfortable journey.
Furthermore, it should be noted that by the end of the year, escalators at the «Palace «Ukraine» metro station will be undergoing repairs. The last inspection of these escalators took place in the spring of 2014. All components will be thoroughly checked for wear and compliance with technical standards.
