The concept of a vast quilt was initiated by Australian artist Jeanette McLaughlin, who started the project in the early days of the full-scale invasion.
Recently, the first 600 meters of the world’s largest patchwork quilt, ‘Sunflower Quilt For Ukraine — Patchwork of Victory’, were unveiled near the Great Lavra Bell Tower, as reported by the National Preserve ‘Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra’.
This quilt, crafted by artisans from over 25 countries, has become a symbol of international support for Ukrainian soldiers and a tool for raising funds for reconstructive surgeries for injured defenders.
The event was part of Ukrainian Fashion Week, with support from the Charity Fund ‘Doctors for Heroes’, Charity Fund ‘YANKO’, the Ukrainian Quilter's Association, Pechersk District Administration, and other concerned partners.
Guests of the event not only witnessed the unique quilt but also contributed their symbolic patches with messages.
The project began in the early days of the full-scale invasion, and by the end of next summer, the quilt is expected to reach a length of 1100 meters.
If successful, the quilt will be recorded in the Book of Records of Ukraine and an application will be submitted to the Guinness World Records. Throughout the process, funds will be raised for the soldiers’ needs.
In the future, the quilts are expected to be part of international exhibitions and eventually be donated to military hospitals as a symbol of support and gratitude.
“This project is larger than a peaceful protest against war. We understand the powerful emotional healing that Patchwork can provide, but we now want to reach out to our friends and partners in Ukraine and beyond to support the reconstructive surgeries for our military. This is also patchwork that allows our heroes to return to life,” said Maria Nelga, head of the Ukrainian Quilter's Association.
“The quilt will continue to be created until it reaches 1100 meters — the distance from the start to the end of Khreshchatyk, so that next year we can spread it along the main street of Ukraine,” shared Natalia Lyutikova, founder of the Charity Fund ‘Doctors for Heroes’. — The initiative is called ‘Sunflower Quilt For Ukraine — Patchwork of Victory’ and aims to engage creative people from various countries to support Ukraine, wounded soldiers, and to showcase the extraordinary achievements of Ukrainian surgeons in reconstructive facial surgery.
A fundraising campaign has been launched to support this initiative in Ukraine.
Within the project, an exhibition titled ‘Unbreakable Patchwork’ is open, featuring works by artisans. It will run at the bell tower until September 15, daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
