The Kyiv authorities are actively working to maintain the current transport fares, despite the challenges posed by the ongoing war.
This was reported by the mayor of the capital, Vitali Klitschko, in a statement on Telegram.
He noted that public transport in Kyiv is subsidized, with a gap of approximately 11 billion hryvnias annually between the existing fares and economically justified rates.
«These funds come from the city budget. However, given that the capital lost 8 billion for Ukrzaliznytsia, there is not enough money for the planned subsidy. Therefore, the finance department is once again proposing to reconsider the fares», — emphasized the mayor.
Klitschko also added that an additional billion hryvnias is allocated from the city budget for free transportation of privileged categories, which the state does not compensate.
«We are doing everything possible to support people in difficult times. The central government has taken measures to restrict the cities' ability to maintain transport fares. Now we are looking for solutions to rectify the situation and preserve the existing fares. As I have said before, we will not consider raising fares until the war is over!», — concluded Klitschko.
